How to Protect Alloy Wheels in the Winter

After spending time and money on your alloy wheels, you will naturally want to protect them. Winter is a dangerous time for your alloys because the measures taken to protect the roads themselves can actually damage your alloy wheels, along with your vehicle's undercarriage. The salt that is used to de-ice the roads can also cause your alloys to become blemished or oxidized. To keep your alloys protected during winter you therefore need to take some preventive measures.

Things You'll Need

  • Car cleanser
  • Sponge
  • Hose
  • Lint-free cloth
  • Wheel protectant
  • Rinse your alloys with a hose any time that you have driven on salted roads.

  • Clean the alloys once a week with a sponge and car cleanser mixed with water or as indicated on the product's label. Use the sponge to clean around the spokes and reach all areas of each alloy. Rinse thoroughly.

  • Before the first ice or snow storm, apply a coating of a winter protectant product to the alloys using a lint free cloth. Rinse if indicated on the product's label.

  • Reapply the protectant as recommended.
