How to Replace Barina Brake Pads

Holden, the Australian arm of General Motors, offers the Barina in the five-door hatchback and sedan. Like any car, the Barina requires regular maintenance of its components, including the brake pads. The pads should be replaced before your disk brakes start to make grinding sounds.

Things You'll Need

  • Floor jack
  • Jack stands
  • Ratchet
  • Socket set
  • Torque wrench
  • Wire
  • C-clamp
  • Open the hood. Locate the master-cylinder container, which holds the brake fluid. Take out a third of the fluid from the tank with a sanitized turkey baster or siphon.

  • Loosen the wheel's lug nuts with a ratchet and socket. Do not remove the lug nuts completely.

  • Elevate the front part of the Barina with a floor jack. Drop the car's frame onto jack stands.

  • Tug the wheel off the Barina. Put aside the lug nuts and wheel.

  • Find the top and bottom mounting bolts on the rear section of the brake caliper. Loosen and remove each bolt with a ratchet and socket.

  • Tug the brake caliper away from the brake assembly and hold the brake caliper to the Barina's frame with a piece of wire.

  • Remove the inner brake pads and outer brake pads. Remember the location of the brake pads.

  • Place the new inner and outer pads into the caliper.

  • Put a C-clamp over the brake caliper with the fixed section touching the rear of the brake caliper and the screw mechanism against the brake caliper piston. Tighten the C-clamp.

  • Reattach the brake caliper to the brake assembly. Tighten the mounting bolts.

  • Slide the wheels back on the vehicle. Hand-tighten the lug nuts on the wheel.

  • Raise the floor jack a few inches and remove both jack stands from underneath the Barina.

  • Lower the Barina to the ground slowly. Tighten the lug nuts to 80 foot-lbs. with a torque wrench. Top off the master-cylinder container with new brake fluid.

  • Apply pressure to the brake pedal until the pedal is firm. Take the Barina for a test-drive.
