How to Turn Off the Anti-theft in a 1997 Volkswagen Jetta

Some versions of the 1997 Volkswagen Jetta offered an anti-theft system to secure the car. The alarm goes off whenever a door seems forced open after you have locked it, using either the keyless remote or ignition key. One common nuisance with these model Jettas is the alarm going off after you change the battery or if the battery dies and then restarts. This is a basic security measure which you can override if you have the VW remote or ignition key.

Things You'll Need

  • Jetta keyless remote
  • Ignition key
  • Press the "Unlock" key on the keyless remote to unlock the doors. If you do not have the remote, use the car key to unlock the driver side door. This will turn off the alarm.

  • Open the trunk to temporarily disarm the alarm. This isn't a full disarm, however, so you will still need to unlock a door to ensure the alarm doesn't go off again.

  • Lock all the Jetta doors with either your keyless remote or the car key if you have recently replaced the battery.

  • Wait five seconds, and then unlock the car doors again. This confirms that you have access to the locking mechanism of the Jetta and it will turn off the anti-theft system. The system will re-activate whenever you lock all the doors to the Jetta.
