Cam Sensor Location in Subarus

The engine on a Subaru utilizes a camshaft position sensor as part of its engine management system. The sensor tells the powertrain control module when the number 1 piston is at top dead center (TDC).

Characteristics

  • The sensor location on the Subaru and the number of sensors varies, depending on whether the vehicle has a turbocharged engine. Non-turbocharged engines have one sensor, while turbocharged engines have two sensors.

Non-Turbocharged Engine

  • In non-turbocharged Subaru vehicles, the cam sensor is installed on the left side, between the back of the timing belt cover and the front of the valve cover. The bracket is attached to the cylinder head.

Turbocharged Engine

  • Turbocharged Subaru engines have two cam sensors installed at the rear of the cylinder heads. The brackets attach at the rear outer corner of the head.
