Volkswagen Jetta Transmission Problems

According to Samarin's, a vehicle's transmission is one of the "most-easy-to-break" components, which also happens to be one of the most costly to fix. A Volkswagon Jetta is no different and can experience transmission problems if not properly serviced at regular intervals.

Low Transmission Fluid

  • If your Jetta is low on transmission fluid, then you may smell burning of fluid that remains or experience gears slipping. Check the transmission fluid while the car is running and is at normal operating temperatures. If the fluid smells like burnt toast or has a dark, blackish appearance, then it needs to be flushed and replaced.

Neutral Start Switch

  • If the neutral start switch is not properly adjusted or is failing, then the Jetta wil be able to start in gears other than park or neutral. This could result in starting the car before you are prepared to do so, elevating the risk of an accident.

Slipping Gears

  • Once the transmission becomes worn and needs repair, you will notice the slipping of gears or certain gears becoming unavailable. Other indications of the transmission needing service include rough shifting or excessive (more than one second) pauses between gears.
