How to Get New Saab Keys

Owners of specific Saab models best hang on tight to their keys as replacing them is not as easy as heading down to the local hardware store to have a new one cut. Beginning with the 1998 model, the manufacturer equipped certain models with an electronic key, which is programmed with a specific code that the vehicle must recognize before the ignition will start. This system is called the TWICE module -- Theft Warning Integrated Central Electronics. If an owner loses all the keys and transponders to the vehicle, replacement will be extremely expensive. Electronic keys are standard in models 1999 through 2002 Saab 9-3, 2003 Saab 9-3 CV and 1998 through 2009 Saab 9-5.

Things You'll Need

  • Saab vehicle model number 1999 through 2002 Saab 9-3, 2003 Saab 9-3 CV and 1998 through 2009 Saab 9-5
  • Money, roughly $1,000

Instructions

  • Check the model year and number of your Saab, taking note if your vehicle is a 1999 through 2002 Saab 9-3, 2003 Saab 9-3 CV or 1998 through 2009 Saab 9-5. Look online or in the phone book for the number to your local Saab dealership. Call the dealer and ask to speak with the service department.

  • Explain to the service department that you lost all of your keys and need a replacement. Provide the model year and model number for your Saab. Wait for the service technician to let you know if you will need a new TWICE module programmed and installed. Ask for an estimate and expect the cost to be around $1,000 for the parts and labor. Make an appointment at your earliest convenience to have your car taken to the service center.

  • Contact a local towing company or ask the assistance of a friend or relative to have your vehicle towed to the dealership. Driving in a separate vehicle, arrive on time to your appointment and meet with the Saab technician. Ask for a printed estimate that contains the price for all of the parts and labor. Confirm with the technician when the vehicle will be ready for pick up. Make sure he has your correct phone number.

  • Leave the dealership and wait for a call from the technician who will let you know that your vehicle is ready. Have someone drive you to the dealership so you can pick up your Saab. Meet again with the technician who will give you the final price of the programming and installation. Ensure the keys work properly; you should receive at least two programmed keys with transponders. Pay your bill and leave your dealership. Take caution not to lose your keys again.
