What Kind of Transmission Fluid Does a Nissan Sentra Take?

It is recommended by Nissan to have your Sentra's transmission fluid inspected every 3,000 miles, or once a month, and drained and filled with the proper transmission fluid every 30,000 miles.

Transmission Fluid Type

  • The type of transmission fluid that Nissan recommends for your Sentra is Dexon II Automatic Transmission Fluid or equal. You can find these fluids at a local auto parts store or online.

Checking ATF Levels

  • The dipstick, in the back right of the engine, indicates whether or not your Sentra has enough ATF. Check the fluid level while your Sentra is running at normal operating temperature. Also, one side has a COLD scale and the other has a HOT scale to offer you a reading of the transmission temperature. The fluid is deemed hot after the car has been driven on the highway for 15 miles.

Adding ATF

  • The fluid is added through the dipstick metal tube. Remove the dipstick and insert a tube or a funnel for ATF to pour through. Make sure that your Sentra is running while you are adding the ATF. The ATF should reach the FULL mark, or between the H and L marks, on the dipstick. Do not overfill.
