45,000 Miles Checkup List for a Toyota Highlander

Maintenance is essential for the Toyota Highlander in terms of performance and protection in warranty cases, and the 45,000-mile inspection is no exception. Because it is the responsibility of the owner to keep the vehicle maintenance, one should keep detailed records that include the dates and details. If the car ever changes hands, the records should go with it. All Toyotas are equipped with a book in which you can log your maintenance sessions.

Routine Maintenance

  • The start a 45,00-mile check includes a look at the basics. For both for the four-cylinder and V6 models, the include a tire rotation, fluid adjustments and, in the case of four-wheel drives, the re-torquing of the propeller shaft bolt.

Visual Inspection

  • For 45,000-mile maintenance, one must look a little deeper at parts not covered in the basic routine check. For breaks, this includes linings, drums, pads and discs inspection. Other items requiring inspection include the brake lines and hoses, engine coolant, drive shaft boots, radiator, exhaust pipes and steering. For four-wheel drives, this includes the transfer case and differential oil. If wear is discovered, parts should be replaced.

Cabin Filter

  • The cabin filter needs to be replaced at 45,000 miles if the driver notices less air flow from the air conditioner or heater or if the windows easily fog when using the "Fresh" mode.

Special Situations

  • Tightening nuts and bolts on the chassis and body and inspecting engine filter are necessary during the 45,000-mile check for Highlanders that drive in a lot of dust. Vehicles that tow need a rear and transfer case oil replacement and nuts-and-bolts tightening on the chassis and body if this hasn't already occurred because of other conditions.

V-6 Engines Considerations

  • Highlanders with V-6 engines require an oil change and filter replacement at the 45,000 mark if they didn't use 0W-20 oil in the previous oil change or if they frequently drive in dust, idle and/or drive slowly for long periods of time.
