How Do I Find the Master Code on My 1997 Lincoln?

For model year 1997, Lincoln manufactured only three cars: Town Car, Continental and Mark VIII. All three models featured keyless entries that allowed you to type in a master code on a keypad above the driver's side door handle. You also could use this master code to change the keyless entry code to one of your choosing---one you could more easily remember. However, if you've forgotten the master code or purchased a 1997 Lincoln and do not know the master code, you cannot use the keyless entry or change the code to one you prefer. Luckily, you can find the code in the car if you know where to look.

  • Open your vehicle's trunk. Do this by keyless remote, use your ignition key or press the "Trunk" button inside the car.

  • Look at the trunk hinge. Find the white sticker on the hinge. The white sticker will only have the five-digit master code for the car typed on it.

  • Write the code down and keep it in a safe place.

  • Type the numbers of the master code into the keypad on the driver's side door to open the door. You can also use the code to lock the doors, pop the trunk and change the keyless entry code.
