How do I Remove Personalized Plates?

Personalized license plates allow a motor vehicle owner to display a name or message on the license plate rather than randomly chosen numbers and letters. While personalized plates provide interesting alternatives to typical plates, a vehicle owner may change his preference after application of the plates. Moreover, if the vehicle is sold, the new owner may not wish to retain the personalized plate of the previous owner. The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) for each state delimits its procedures for removal of personalized plates. However, the requirements in most states are similar.

  • Contact your local DMV office to learn your state's specific personalized plate removal procedures.

  • Indicate on your annual vehicle renewal that you do not wish to renew the personalized plate. Do not pay the personalized plate renewal fee.

  • Request traditional plates in-person at the DMV office or indicate a request for traditional plates on your registration form.
