How to Install a Fuel Filter for a Mercedes Benz 300E

The 300E was a popular model from German car maker Mercedes Benz that was made as a coupe and as a sedan. The fuel filter on the 300E should be replaced every 20,000 to 30,000 miles depending on the conditions in which the car is driven. If it is driven in dusty, dry conditions the fuel filter may need to be changed more often. Replacing a 300E fuel filter is quite easy, since it is located under the rear of the car and is easily accessed.

Things You'll Need

  • Floor jack
  • Jack stands
  • Socket set and ratchet
  • Screwdriver
  • Rags
  • Locking pliers
  • New fuel filter
  • Lift the rear of the vehicle with a floor jack and lower it onto a pair of jack stands. Under the car, between the right (passenger-side) rear tire and the fuel tank is a plastic cover that conceals and protects the 300E’s fuel filter.

  • Remove the plastic nuts that hold the panel on with a socket and a ratchet or a wrench. Remove the panel and set it aside.

  • Place a pair of locking pliers on the fuel lines where they come out of the either end of the filter so that they squeeze the lines shut. This is to prevent fuel from coming out when the filter is removed. You can also use rags between the jaws of the pliers to protect the lines.

  • Loosen the hose clamps that hold the fuel lines to the fuel filter with a screwdriver. Pull the lines off the filter by twisting and simultaneously pulling on them. Loosen the bolt or nut that tightens the filter to the filter bracket. Remove the filter and discard it.

  • Wipe up any spilled fuel with a rag. Install the new filter into the bracket, ensuring that the arrow is pointing towards the engine end of the car and away from the tank. Install the fuel lines and tighten the hose clamps. Remove the locking pliers from the fuel lines. Lower the car to the ground.
