Chevrolet provides Cobalt owners with a list of scheduled maintenance, which need to be performed to keep the vehicle in proper running condition. General Motors warns car owners that a warranty can be voided if damage occurs because of the owner's failure to follow the required scheduled maintenance outlined in the owner's manual. It is also necessary to use correct replacement parts, fluids and lubricants, which are listed in the owner's manual.
Under scheduled maintenance I, the oil and oil filter should be changed. Visually check for any leaks and damage. The air filter should also be looked at and replaced if necessary. Measure the air pressure and tread depth of the tires, and rotate them. Check and fill all fluid levels, such as engine coolant, transmission fluid and windshield wiper fluid.
The scheduled maintenance II requires all the services in maintenance I be done along with inspecting the suspension, throttle system, steering components, wiper blades and engine cooling system. Lubricate all body components and replace the passenger compartment air filter. Lastly, inspect all safety features such as seat belts, latches and airbag covers.
At each 25,000-mile interval, examine the fuel system for damage and leaks. Inspect the exhaust system for loose or damaged parts. At each 50,000-mile interval, all of the above services should be done and the engine air filter changed. At 100,000 miles, replace the spark plugs, and at 150,000 miles drain, flush and refill the engine cooling system. In addition, clean the radiator, condenser, pressure cap and filler neck and have a pressures test done. Lastly, inspect the engine accessory belt.
GM recommends car owners rotate between scheduled maintenance I and II. Following these maintenance schedules is recommended for owners who drive the Cobalt on reasonable road surfaces within legal speed limits and use the correct fuel. Cobalts driven in extreme weather, dusty situations or used for delivery will require more frequent checks and services.
GM suggests drivers perform specific checks, such as checking the oil level, engine coolant level and windshield wiper fluid, each time the car is filled with gasoline. At least once a month check the air pressure in the tires. Once a year check the starter switch, automatic transaxle shift control lock system and ignition transaxle lock, and wash the underbody of the vehicle to remove corrosive material.
