How to Program BMW Door Locks

If you lose the keyless-entry remote for your BMW door locks, you can purchase a replacement remote from a BMW dealership. If you choose that route, the dealer can program your remote for you. However, if you choose to purchase a replacement or an additional remote from another source, you will have to program the remote and the door locks yourself.

  • Close all the doors and the trunk.

  • Open the driver’s-side door, and get in the car. Shut the door.

  • Put the key in the ignition.

  • Turn the key from the “on” position to the “off” position five times quickly without starting the engine.

  • Pull the key out of the ignition.

  • Press and hold the "unlock" button on your remote.

  • Press the "lock" button three times while continuing to hold the "unlock" button.

  • Release the "unlock" button. Once you’ve released the button, the door locks will begin to cycle, indicating that the remote has been properly programmed. If this does not happen, begin again from Step 1.

  • Put the key back into the ignition, and turn it from “on” to “off” once more to set the remote programming.
