How to Remove a Window Handle on a Chevy Express

There are a few occasions when you may need to disassemble your door to do some work: replacing glass, swapping a window regulator or even fixing a door handle. The first step to get into the door is to remove the window handle, and if you don't know how it's connected, removing it can be a bit challenging. Fortunately, if you have the right tools, you can remove a window handle in just a few minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Window crank removal tool
  • Open the door and hold the window crank with one hand while pushing back the door panel with the other. Examine the base of the window crank, looking for a c-shaped slip. This is what you must remove to get the window handle off. Figure out which way the clip is oriented, and if you can see the tabs of the clips bending out, that's the direction in which you want to insert the tool.

  • Slide the window crank removal tool into the gap between the window handle and the door panel. The tool is going to push the edges of the clip off from around the crank assembly. You may have to wiggle this tool in and out of the gap repeatedly until the clip comes free. It's like a spring, so it may come shooting out from the door panel. Keep away from the opposite end of the handle as you're using the tool.

  • Pull the handle off of the door and pick up the clip from wherever it launched to. There if a slot on the back of the window handle. Slide the clip into the slot. This way, when you go to reinstall the handle, you just have to push the handle onto the regulator.
