How to Remove Broken License Plate Screws on a VW

When you trade in your Volkswagen or have to get new license plates, you will need to remove your current license plates. Problem is, the screws on the plate are exposed to all sorts of weather conditions, which can significantly deteriorate and even break the screws. Removing broken license plate screws from your VW is not that hard, but you'll need more than just a screwdriver..

Things You'll Need

  • Cola
  • Cloth
  • Screwdriver
  • Vise-Grip pliers
  • Pour cola over the screw and allow it to sit for a moment. The carbonation in the cola will help eat away at the rust and loosen the grip it has on the screw. Wipe the remaining cola away with a cloth.

  • Push your screwdriver into the screw head, and provide pressure against the screw. Turn the screwdriver counterclockwise and see if you can get the screw to catch. Even if you can only get the screw to turn one or two rotations, it will be helpful.

  • Pinch and lock your Vise-Grip pliers around the tip of the screw. If you do not have a pair of Vise-Grip pliers, you can use regular pliers. Needlenose pliers will not work, though, because the tips are too thin.

  • Turn the pliers counterclockwise while keeping a solid grip on the tool. This will prevent any slippage you may encounter while turning.

  • Rotate the screw a few times until you can finish unscrewing it with your fingers.
