How to Change the Transmission Fluid in an Acura

To change the transmission fluid on your Honda Acura, it is recommended you warm up the engine by driving the vehicle around for a few minutes and getting the fluid hot. Check the fluid by carefully removing the transmission fill plug on the side of the transmission housing next to the transmission drain plug. If no fluid comes out when you remove the plug, it needs to be filled. Honda motors use a special Honda-approved ATF or Dextron II transmission fluid that can be obtained at any local automotive supply store or at any online Honda supply house (see References).

Things You'll Need

  • Ramps
  • 4-by-4-inch wood block
  • Drain pan
  • Open end wrench
  • Socket wrench set
  • Honda transmission bolt washer
  • Funnel with long stem
  • Honda-approved ATF or Dextron II transmission fluid
  • Pull your Honda Acura up on car ramps after having warmed up the transmission to change the transmission fluid. Place the transmission in park. Put a 4-by4-inch wood block behind one of the rear tires.

  • Place a drain pan underneath the Acura's transmission housing and locate the fill plug next to the transmission drain plug. Use an open-end wrench to remove the fill plug and set the plug aside.

  • Unfasten the transmission drain plug with a socket wrench and allow the fluid to drain into the drain pan. Once the Acura's transmission is drained, place a new drain plug washer around the drain plug and secure it to the transmission housing with a socket wrench.

  • Slide the long stemmed funnel from the top of the engine down to where the fill plug is located on the transmission housing. From underneath the Acura, feed the end of the funnel tube into the fill plug opening.

  • Fill the transmission with three quarts of Honda-approved fluid. Pull the funnel out of the engine. Place the fill plug back in the transmission housing and tighten the plug with an open-end wrench.

  • Remove the wood block from behind the rear tire. Drive the Acura off the car ramps. Let the car continue running for a moment to allow the new transmission fluid to cycle through the transmission and then turn off the engine.

  • Dispose of the drained transmission fluid at your local recycling center or automotive supply center.
