How to Add Radiator Coolant to a VW Rabbit

Knowing how to add radiator coolant to your VW Rabbit can not only save you money in car maintenance fees but also can provide you with the knowledge necessary to keep an overheating engine cool until you can visit a service station. Adding coolant to a VW Rabbit is an easy process that anyone can accomplish.

Things You'll Need

  • Duckhams Antifreeze & Summer Coolant mixed with 50 percent distilled water
  • Release the hood to access the engine compartment. Make sure the hood is securely supported by its support arm.

  • Locate the coolant fill port, in the top left area of the engine compartment. Determine if you need to add coolant by looking at the coolant fill container. This container is translucent and has lines marking the current coolant level, and minimum and maximum fill lines.

  • Open your container of coolant and position it above the coolant fill port. Lining the fill port and pour spout of the coolant container up as closely as possible, begin pouring radiator coolant into the fill port.

  • Pour in coolant until it reaches the bottom of the coolant fill port. Take note of the fill level by looking into the fill port; do not overfill. The VW Rabbit is equipped with a seal coolant loop and as such should not need regular coolant refills. If you find you are losing coolant regularly, it might be a sign of leakage from the radiator or hoses.

  • Replace the caps on your coolant container and coolant fill port, and close your hood.

  • Turn on the car's engine for five to 10 minutes to allow the coolant to work its way through the VW Rabbit's cooling loop and radiator.
