How to Maintain Power Steering Fluid Levels in a Toyota Tacoma

The Toyota Tacoma has been a popular truck since its debut in 1995 and remains in production in two different engine classes. For all Tacoma trucks, fluid maintenance is an easy procedure to perform at home that will prolong the life of your truck. The power steering fluid especially should always be at the appropriate level to ensure your safety while driving.

Things You'll Need

  • Power steering fluid
  • Check the power steering fluid in your Toyota Tacoma every six months or sooner if you experience problems with the power steering system or notice fluid leaking from underneath the hood. You should not have to add fluid sooner than 60,000 miles even if you use the vehicle heavily.

  • Park your truck on a level surface and allow at least half an hour for the engine to cool to ensure an accurate fluid level reading.

  • Locate the power steering fluid reservoir under the hood of your Toyota Tacoma for all vehicles. For the 5 VZ-FE engine, the reservoir is on the passenger side of the vehicle towards the front of the car, in front of the engine. For the 1 FZ-FE engine, the reservoir is located on the driver's side of the engine in a prominent position.

  • Check that the power steering fluid reads between the "Hot" and "Cold" levels. If the level is low, remove the cap and gradually add fluid, taking care not to over fill the reservoir. Check the owner's manual for approved power steering fluid. Drain excess fluid by disconnecting the hose at the base of the reservoir.

  • Inspect the reservoir, hoses, clamps and power steering pump for any worn areas or breaks in the components. Replace any leaky parts as soon as possible to avoid hot power steering fluid leaking into your engine.
