How Much Oil Does a Honda VTX 1800 Need?

The 1800 cc VTX had the largest production V-twin when it was introduced to the world in 2002. Described as both "a behemoth" and "sultry," the Honda VTX 1800 weighs in at between 734 pounds for the VTX 1800C1 version and 780 pounds for the F2 and 3 models sold in California. According to Honda, its oil needs for the both the crankcase and the final drive are very specific.

Engine Oil

  • Filler and dipstick are located on the top-left of the crankcase. The crankcase holds 3.7 quarts of oil. An oil and filter change takes 3.9 quarts. Honda recommends SAE 10W40, with an American Petroleum Institute classification as SG or higher, or JASO standard 903 MA 4-stroke motorcycle oil. Don't use oils the API designates as "energy conserving" or non-detergent oils, and avoid oils with graphite or molybdenum. Don't use castor oil or racing oil in your VTX 1800.

Final Drive OiL

  • The final drive gear oil filler is located on the left-rear of the final drive gear case. When you drain and change the final drive oil, you need 4.1 oz. of SAE 80 oil to refill the final drive system.
