In 2002, Chevrolet discontinued the four-door Blazer, and replaced it with the four-door TrailBlazer, though the two-door Blazer remained. In 2006, Chevy dropped the Blazer altogether, and replaced it with the TrailBlazer. The 2007 TrailBlazer SS was the high-performance version of the SUV, as it came with a 395-horsepower, 6.0-liter V-8 engine. Despite it being a high-performance vehicle, changing the oil and filter is a straightforward task that requires no special tools to perform.
Open the TrailBlazer's hood and unscrew the plastic thumbscrew in the center of the plastic engine cover. Pull the driver's side of the engine cover upward to disengage it from its fastener. Pivot the front of the engine cover upward and pull it from its bracket. Place the engine cover in a secure location.
Find the oil filler cap on the passenger's side of the engine. Loosen the oil filler cap and pull it from the oil filler tube.
Raise the front of the TrailBlazer with a floor jack and set jack stands under the vehicle's frame rails. Lower the SUV onto the jack stands.
Crawl beneath the vehicle and find the oil pan -- the metal pan on the bottom of the engine. Find the oil drain plug -- on the bottom of the oil pan --using a combination wrench. Position a drain pan under the drain plug and loosen the plug with a combination wrench. Remove the drain plug by hand.
Allow the oil to drain from the pan until only slow drips of oil come from the pan. Clean the drain plug threads with a clean, lint-free cloth and hand-tighten the drain plug into the oil pan. Tighten the drain plug to 18 foot-pounds, using a torque wrench and six-point socket.
Slide towards the rear of the engine, and find the oil filter on the driver's side of the engine. Position the drain pan under the oil filter and loosen it with an oil filter wrench. Allow all of the oil to drain from the filter and remove the filter by hand. Place the oil filter into the drain pan.
Apply a thin coat of new oil to the O-ring on the base of the new oil filter, using your fingers. Clean the oil filter-mounting base on the engine, using a clean, lint-free cloth. Hand-tighten the oil filter onto the oil filter-mounting base. Tighten the oil filter to 22 foot-pounds, using a torque wrench and oil filter cup.
Raise the front of the TrailBlazer from the jack stands, using a floor jack, and pull the jack stands from under the vehicle. Lower the vehicle to the ground.
Insert a funnel into the oil filler tube and pour 6 qts. of 5W-30 synthetic engine oil meeting GM Standard GM4718M into the engine.
Allow the oil to settle for about a minute and pull the dipstick from the TrailBlazer's engine. Wipe the oil from the end of the dipstick, using a clean, lint-free cloth, and reinsert the dipstick. Pull the dipstick out and verify that the oil is within, or slightly above, the crosshatched area on the end of the dipstick. Add more oil as needed and reinsert the engine oil dipstick.
Remove the funnel from the oil filler tube and tighten the oil filler cap onto the oil filler tube.
Start the engine and allow it to run for about two minutes. Check for oil leaks as the engine idles. Shut the engine off and wait about one minute, as the oil settles. Remove the dipstick, and verify that the oil level reaches the crosshatched area on the dipstick. Add more oil to the engine, if needed.
Insert the tabs on the rear of the engine cover into the engine cover bracket on top of the engine. Pivot the engine cover downward, and press the driver's side of the cover down until it's in place. Tighten the thumbscrew into the hole in the center of the engine cover.
Insert a funnel into an empty oil bottle and fill the bottle with old oil in the drain pan. Once full, tighten the bottle's cap. Repeat this step until you transfer all of the old oil into the empty oil bottles.
Take the bottles of old oil and the old oil filter to a used automotive oil-recycling center for disposal. Many auto parts stores take old oil free of charge.
Insert the key in the TrailBlazer's ignition and turn it to the "Run" position.
Press and release the brake pedal three times within three seconds of turning the ignition to "Run."
Observe as the "Change Engine Oil" starts flashing. Turn the ignition to the "Lock" position once the "Change Engine Oil" light stops flashing.
Remove the key from the ignition.
