Can an Owner Change the Oil on a 2010 Honda CR-V?

In 1997, Honda released its compact SUV, the CR-V. Honda redesigned the CR-V once in 2002 and again in 2007. The 2010 CR-V had only one engine available: a 180-horsepower, 2.4-liter in-line four-cylinder. The 2010 CR-V has a reminder system that alerts the driver when maintenance, such as an oil change, is due. After completing an oil change on the CR-V, you must reset this system, as it does not reset itself.

Do-it-Yourself Oil Change

  • An oil change is one of the most basic of maintenance procedures for most vehicles. You can perform an oil change on your 2010 Honda CR-V yourself with the right tools.

Tools needed

  • You need basic tools, such as: combination wrench set, drain pan, funnel, floor jack, jack stands, oil filter wrench and a torque wrench.

Draining the Oil

  • With your 2010 CR-V jacked up and supported by jack stands, position a drain pan under the drain plug. Remove the plug and let the oil drain into the pan. Once the oil stops draining -- slows to just a few small drips -- hand-thread the plug and tighten it to 29 foot-pounds.

Replacing the Oil Filter

  • Position the drain pan under the oil filter and loosen the filter. Let all of the oil drain from the oil filter and remove the filter. Apply a thin coat of oil to the O-ring on the new filter and tighten onto the engine until the O-ring meets the mating surface on the engine. Tighten the filter an additional one turn after the O-ring touches the mating surface.

Filling the Oil

  • With the car lowered to the ground, remove the oil filler cap on top of the engine and insert a funnel into the filler hole. Pour in 4.4 quarts of API-certified, 0W-20 engine oil. Check the oil level via the engine oil dipstick and add oil, as needed. Start the engine and check for leaks. Shut it off, wait two minutes and check the level again.

Oil Disposal

  • Used oil is harmful to the environment and you must dispose of it legally. Transfer the old fluid to the empty oil bottles and take the bottles to an oil disposal center. Many auto parts stores accept used oil.

Resetting Maintenance Minder

  • With the CR-V's ignition in the "On" position, press and release the reset button -- under the speedometer -- until "Oil Life" shows on the instrument cluster. Hold the reset button for about 10 seconds until the display enters "Reset" mode. Turn the reset button until "Oil Life" displays in the "Reset" menu and press and release the reset button to enter the "Oil Life" reset. Press and hold the reset button for five seconds until the "Oil Life" display reads "100%" and the maintenance light extinguishes.
