How to Fix the Oil Light in an '04 PT Cruiser

Engine oil is an essential part of any vehicle and is used to lubricate, clean, improve sealing and cool the engine. The oil needs to be inspected and changed to ensure the vehicle is properly running. The 2004 PT Cruiser comes equipped with a oil pressure light that signals drivers of low or possibly dirty engine oil. When this light comes on, the oil needs to be inspected. Driving a Cruiser with dirty or improper fuel levels can cause the engine to overheat and possibly fail.

  • Check the engine oil. Wait five minutes to allow the engine to cool if the car was currently running.

  • Pop the hood by pulling the hood release lever located to the left of the steering wheel.

  • Push the hood release lever under the head and prop up the hood.

  • Remove the oil dipstick from the oil compartment. The end of the dipstick has a "drop" icon indicating the oil.

  • Read the level of the oil. There are two marks on the dipstick: minimum oil mark and maximum oil mark. The oil should fall in between these two marks.

  • Replace your oil. Oil that is below or above the minimum and maximum marks or is dirty needs to be replaced. Take your vehicle to a local dealership or oil change shop to have your oil inspected, replaced and disposed. The light turns off after the engine registered the new oil.
