An oil change is a simple maintenance step that is vital in preserving a healthy vehicle. Changing your own oil has many advantages, but it must be done carefully and correctly. Certain tools and procedures are specific to changing the oil of a Cummins 6.7L engine.

Things You'll Need

  • 5 gallon pan
  • Oil filter
  • 3 gallons of 15W40 oil
  • 1/2 inch drive ratchet
  • 93MM oil filter wrench
  • 3/8 inch ratchet
  • Torque wrench
  • Funnel
  • Drive the vehicle for a few minutes to warm the oil. Park the vehicle and turn off the engine.

  • Open the hood and release the oil filler cap.

  • While holding a 5 gallon pan and 1/2 inch ratchet, inch yourself under the vehicle. Use the ratchet to remove the drain plug. Place the pan underneath the drain and allow the oil to drain for approximately 30 minutes.

  • Recover the drain plug. Inch yourself back underneath the vehicle and reinstall the drain plug. Carefully drag out the pan from underneath the vehicle.

  • Clean the area surrounding the oil filter head. Loosen the filter using the filter wrench and empty the oil into the 5 gallon pan.

  • Get the new filter and fill it with oil. Apply oil to the gasket and mount the filter until it just makes contact with the engine. Come out from underneath the vehicle.

  • Remove the loosened oil cap. Insert the funnel and pour in all of the oil except for approximately 1 quart.

  • Remove the funnel and reinstall the oil cap. Start the engine.
