The oil filter in your VW captures dirt and and other particles trapped in the engine oil and prevents them from circulating inside the engine. The oil filter needs to be changed every 4,000 miles. An oil change should be performed when changing the oil filter. Changing the oil filter assembly in a VW is simple and can be done in very little time.
Raise the front of the car securely, using a jack. Rest the car on jack stands. Chock the front tires to make sure the care is safe before working underneath.
Locate the splash shield in the fender well, behind the front bumper. Using the T-25 Torx screwdriver, remove the eight T-25 torx screws (four on each side of the shield). Remove the splash shield by disengaging the two tabs at the front of the pan. Pull the shield towards the rear of the vehicle.
Locate the oil filter housing.
Unscrew the cap cover to reveal the orange-colored bleeder valve. The cap cover will be tethered to a cable.
Attach the oil drain adapter tool to the bleeder valve by screwing it into the oil filter housing. Allow the oil in the filter housing to drain completely into a pan before removing the tool.
Attach the 36mm socket with extension bar to a ratchet and remove the lower portion of the oil filter housing. Inside, you will see the oil filter element and O-ring seal: Remove both.
Install the new oil filter element and the new O-ring seal.
Reinstall the lower portion of the oil filter housing, using the 36mm socket, extension bar and ratchet.
Screw the cap cover back over the bleeder valve.
Reinstall the splash shield by tightening the eight T-25 Torx screws, using the T-25 Torx screwdriver.
Replace the oil. Total oil capacity for your VW is 4.5 qt.
