How to Reset the 'Change Engine Oil' Light on a 2006 Chevy Silverado

The computer in a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado has a maintenance light that illuminates in the gauge cluster to show when the truck needs an oil change. Just changing the oil doesn't turn off the light, though; you have to manually reset the system. You can do this with no special tools and nothing more than your ignition key and about a minute or so of your time.

  • Place your Silverado's key into the ignition. Turn the key to the "Run" position, but do not start the truck.

  • Press your right foot down hard on the accelerator pedal three times within a five-second window. Look on the gauge cluster and see if the maintenance light is flashing. Allow it to flash for at least 10 seconds, or until it stops.

  • Turn the key to the "Off" position and remove it from the ignition. Turn the key to "Run" again and make sure the maintenance light turns off. If not, repeat the process and try pumping the accelerator pedal faster.
