How to Change the Oil in a 2001 Honda Accord

The oil inside of the 2001 Honda Accord is what keeps the moving parts inside of the engine cool and lubricated. The oil is pumped out of the oil pan and through the oil filter. Once that the oil leaves the oil filter, the oil enters into the engine and sticks to all of the internal parts. Once that the oil starts to break down, the oil will not be able to protect the internal parts as it should. Honda recommends changing the oil on the 2001 Honda Accord every 3,000 miles.

Things You'll Need

  • Jack
  • Jack stands
  • Oil catch pan
  • 14 mm box end wrench
  • Clean rags
  • Oil filter pliers
  • New oil filter
  • Funnel
  • New oil-5/20
  • Park the 2001 Honda Accord on a level surface and shut the engine off. Open the hood and remove the oil cap. The oil cap will have 5/20 marked on top.

  • Jack up the front end of the 2001 Honda Accord and set the jack stands under the frame rail behind each front tire. Lower the Accord onto the frame rail. Make sure that the Accord is secure on the jack stands.

  • Slide under the driver side front of the car and locate the drain plug on the rear of the oil pan. The drain plug is on the very back of the oil pan. The oil pan drain plug is a 14 mm bolt head.

  • Slide the oil catch pan underneath the oil pan drain plug. Turn the drain plug counter-clockwise with the 14 mm box end wrench to loosen. Finish unscrewing the drain plug with your fingers. Once all of the oil has drained out of the oil pan and into the catch pan, wipe off the drain plug with a clean rag and screw the drain plug back into the oil pan. Tighten the drain plug back down tight with the 14 mm box end wrench.

  • Locate the oil filter on the rear of the engine. The oil filter on the 2001 Honda Accord is on the rear of the engine straight up from the oil pan. The oil filter is in a horizontal position. Slide the oil catch pan over enough to catch the small amount of oil that will come out of the horizontal oil filter. Remove the oil filter with the oil filter pliers. Turn the oil filter counter-clockwise to loosen the oil filter. Finish unscrewing the oil filter with your hand. Discard the oil filter into the catch pan.

  • Wipe off the facing of the oil filter housing with a clean rag. Rub a small amount of the used motor oil onto the rubber seal on the oil filter. This will allow the oil filter to screw on tighter to the oil filter housing. Screw the new oil filter onto the horizontal threads with your hand. Tighten the oil filter tight with your hand. Then turn the oil filter another one-quarter round with your hand to ensure the tightness of the oil filter. Slide the catch pan out from under the Accord.

  • Slide the funnel into the oil filler tube. Add 4.5 quarts of 5/20 motor oil to the engine. Remove the funnel from the oil filler tube and screw the oil cap back onto the oil filler tube.

  • Crank the engine and let the engine run for about 30 seconds to fill up the oil filter. Turn the engine off and recheck the oil. The oil level should stay full at 4.5 quarts. Check the engine oil on the engine oil dipstick on the driver's side of the engine.

  • Screw the oil cap back onto the oil cap filler. Close the hood.

  • Jack up the 2001 Honda Accord and remove the jack stands out from under the frame rails. Lower the Accord to the ground.
