How to Change the Oil Filter on a Crossfire

When Mercedes-Benz purchased Chrysler, they brought a lot of their product line over to the American brand, integrating the two lines. One of the results of this merger was the Chrysler Crossfire, which uses a Mercedes-Benz engine. Because of that, the oil filter is replaced by an oil cartridge assembly which is on the top of the engine, contrary to most American-made motors. It's still doable at home however, with just the right tools.

Things You'll Need

  • Shop rags
  • Strap wrench
  • Replacement oil filter cartridge
  • Jack
  • Jack stands
  • 3/8-inch ratchet and socket set
  • Drain pan
  • 8 qts. of 0W40 synthetic motor oil
  • Pop the hood and locate the oil filter housing. It's just to the right of the Chrysler emblem on the driver's side of the engine compartment. Unscrew the oil filter housing with your hand. If the housing is too tight, use the strap wrench to break it free, then loosen it with your hands. Pull the housing up out of the engine and hold it steady to allow any excess oil to drain back into the engine. Then place it on a clean workspace, preferably on some shop towels.

  • Slide the old filter cartridge off of the filter housing using your hands and then slide the replacement oil filter onto the housing.

  • Raise up the front of the vehicle using the jack and set it on the jack stands. Make sure that the vehicle is solidly on the stands before crawling underneath it. Unbolt the splash pan from the engine using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket, then slide the drain pan underneath the oil pan drain plug.

  • Unbolt the drain plug from the engine using the ratchet and allow the oil to drain into the drain pan. Once the oil pan is empty, reinstall the drain plug and the splash pan using the ratchet, and lower the vehicle off of the jack stands using the jack.

  • Reinstall the oil filter housing into the engine using your hands. Then remove the oil fill cap just behind the oil filter housing and fill the engine with 8 qts. of 0W40 synthetic motor oil. Start the car and allow it to run for two to five minutes while you check for leaks. If you see any, tighten up the offending part and add more oil appropriately.
