Like any car, a Volvo V50 needs routine maintenance, including regular oil changes. In the case of a 2005 Volvo V50, the oil and filter should be changed every 7,500 miles. This ensures that the engine is always running clean oil, which keeps the engine well-lubricated. Changing the oil is simple and can be done in your driveway with just a few basic tools.
Raise the front of the vehicle using the jack and set it on the jack stands. Make sure that the vehicle is solidly on the stands before crawling underneath it.
Slide underneath the car and unbolt the skid plate from the bottom of the engine using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Set the bolts to the side and move the plastic skid plate out of the workspace so you can work on the oil pan and filter.
Set the oil drain pan underneath the oil pan. Unbolt the drain pan plug from the pan using the ratchet and allow the oil to drain into the pan. Once it's done, reinstall the drain plug using the ratchet.
Move the drain pan toward the oil filter, then use the Volvo oil filter wrench to remove the casing on the cartridge-style oil filter from the engine. Allow the oil to drain and slide the cartridge off of the mount as well, assuming it didn't come off with the housing. Place a replacement filter in the cartridge and fill it with oil, then reinstall it onto the engine using the oil filter tool.
Reinstall the skid plate on the bottom of the car using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Lower the vehicle off of the jack stands using the jack and pop the hood. Open the oil cap and pour the remainder of the oil into the engine. Start the engine and allow it to run for 5 minutes to allow the engine oil to circulate throughout the engine.
