How to Change Transmission Oil in a Honda 450R

The Honda 450r is widely regarded as an upper-echelon ATV. It matches speed with handling to provide an overall satisfying off-road experience. Like any other motor vehicle, its performance and durability requires proper maintenance. One area of particular concern, however, is transmission fluid health. Changing the transmission fluid to prevent transmission damage, takes a few standard tools and a few minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Ratchet
  • 10mm socket
  • 12mm socket
  • Drain bucket
  • Transmission oil
  • Remove the transmission drain bolt. The bolt can be found on the left side of the Honda, under the transmission near the left foot rest pedal. A 12mm socket and ratchet are required for removal.

  • Place the drain bucket directly beneath the transmission drain bolt.

  • Remove the oil fill plug. The plug is found on the left side of the Honda, above and diagonal to the transmission drain bolt.

  • Allow the old transmission fluid to empty from the transmission. You can use a tube to blow into the oil fill plug, forcing the fluid out.

  • Replace the transmission drain bolt. Once the transmission has been emptied of fluid, you are now ready to fill the transmission with new fluid.

  • Remove the transmission check bolt. The transmission check bolt is located beneath the oil drain plug across from the transmission drain bolt. This bolt can be removed with a 10mm socket and ratchet.

  • Fill the transmission with new fluid using a funnel. Place the funnel into the opening left by removal of the oil fill plug. You will know when the transmission is full when the fluid begins to run from the transmission check bolt opening.

  • Replace the oil check bolt (using 10mm socket).

  • Replace the oil drain plug.
