The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has received dozens of complaints about electrical problems with Jeep windows. Consumer reports indicate that the problem is not isolated to one specific make or model. Commanders, Liberties and Grand Cherokees may be affected.
Owners of Jeep Commanders frequently complain to NHTSA that their windows won't roll all the way up or won't roll down properly. One model year 2006 Commander owner told NHTSA that the dealer replaced her driver side switch but the problem still exists. As of 2010, the manufacturer hasn't issued a recall to remedy the issue.
Several Jeep Liberty owners have complained to NHTSA that the window regulators quit working without warning. Some consumers report windows falling down randomly or getting stuck while rolled down. Model year 2005 Jeep Liberty owners have been told by dealers that the problem is common, but no recall has been issued to repair this problem as of 2010.
Electrical problems in Jeep Grand Cherokees may cause the power windows to stop working. A fire hazard also could be present in some cases, according to multiple consumer complaints to NHTSA. One consumer complained to NHTSA that his 2004 Grand Cherokee windows and interior lights stopped working and, due to two factory wires breaking and making contact with each other, causing sparking near the door hinge. This consumer told NHTSA that his mechanic stated this is a common problem in Jeeps, although no recall has been issued as of 2010.
