How to Replace a Stolen Car Key

A stolen car key can be a major inconvenience. Unlike a permanently lost car key, which can be replaced, a stolen car key requires a new lock for the car, in addition to a new key. Modern keys feature electronic security systems that are difficult to duplicate, so you will need to contact your dealer and be referred to a qualified locksmith. If your car key has been stolen, your primary concern should be ensuring the safety of your vehicle. Once your vehicle is secure, you can begin replacing the locking system.

Things You'll Need

  • Vehicle title
  • Vehicle registration
  • Contact the local police, and notify them that your keys were stolen. Be sure to provide a complete account of the crime. Inform them if you believe that the thief may attempt to use your keys to steal your vehicle. If they stole other keys, as well, let the police know what they have access to.

  • Prevent the thief from gaining access to your vehicle. Contact a local towing service to have your vehicle moved to a safe location. You may be able to find a towing service that also offers locksmith services.

  • Contact your car dealer. Ask what they charge to rekey the security system on your vehicle.

  • Contact local locksmith services. Ask if they offer rekeying services for your vehicle, and how much they charge. Many locksmiths provide their services at lower costs than the dealer. Choose a reputable locksmith.

  • Bring your vehicle to your dealer, or a reputable locksmith, to have them rekey your car. Some locksmiths will come to your car and your dealer may offer to send a tow truck; otherwise, you will have to hire a tow truck to move your vehicle. Be prepared to provide proof that you own the vehicle, including the title and registration.
