How Long Do Shock Absorbers Last?

Shock absorbers prevent excess movement of a vehicle's body and suspension system. They eliminate bouncing and provide stability in the vehicle for safe maneuvering. How long shock absorbers will last depends on a number of factors.

Conditions

  • According to Tenneco, the conditions under which you drive can have an effect on the life of your shock absorbers. Factors include weather, where you are driving and what type of loads you carry in the vehicle.

Mileage

  • Shock wear is not determined solely by mileage, according to Toysport. Some shocks may need to be replaced after only 4,000 miles, yet others may function properly well after they've been used for 30,000 to 40,000 miles. Tenneco recommends having them inspected every 20,000 miles. Many manufacturers offer warranties on shocks for 60,000 miles.

Fluid

  • Popular Mechanics indicates that worn shocks will sometimes leak fluid but notes that a small amount of fluid is normal. In addition, many shocks that are very worn out show no fluid at all.

Inspection

  • If your vehicle is bouncing and you hear thumping or rattling noises on railroad tracks or other bumps, you should have your shocks inspected, according to Austin Davis, The Honest Mechanic. He recommends comparing opinions and prices with two or three different mechanics, preferably after they've taken a test drive with you.
