How to Tune a Pontiac Montana

The Pontiac Montana is a minivan that was offered by Pontiac from 1997 to 2009. To tune up a Pontiac Montana requires checking the vehicle's capacities, settings, amount of torque applied to engine parts and more. A general tune up should be performed periodically to ensure the minivan's safety, performance and longevity. The following specifications refer to the 2000 Pontiac Montana, but can be used as general guidelines for any other Montana model year.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench
  • Check the engine's cooling system to ensure it has the correct amount of 1.25 gallons of anti-freeze. Or 2.5 gallons if the minivan uses pre-mixed anti-freeze.

  • Check the air conditioning system to see if it has the correct amount of oil. The air conditioning system should have 8 ounces of oil.

  • Observe the spark plug's gap. The spark plug should have a gap of 0.060 inches.

  • Check the lug nuts on the wheels of your Pontiac Montana to ensure they are secure and tight. Use a wrench to tighten each lug nut with 100 foot-pounds of torque.

  • Make sure the transmission has the right amount of fluid in it. The transmission should contain 13.4 quarts of transmission fluid.

  • Look at the nuts and studs on the engine's exhaust manifold. Use a wrench to tighten the exhaust manifold nuts with 12 foot-pounds of torque, the studs with 13 foot-pounds of torque, and the exhaust manifold pipe nuts with 26 foot-pounds of torque. Start in the center of the exhaust manifold and use a criss-cross pattern when tightening.
