How to Remove the EGR Valve in a Toyota

The exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve on the Toyota engine, located in the back of the engine, mounts above the intake manifold on the driver's side of the engine compartment. The valve consists of a metal cylinder that sits on the top of the engine near the firewall. The EGR valve recycles the burned emission fumes and sends them through the engine burn off a second time, reducing the amount of pollutants sent out the exhaust pipe.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket wrench set
  • Disconnect the exhaust pipe from the Toyota EGR valve: Using a socket wrench, remove the bolts that secure the valve to the pipe. Remove the gaskets from the exhaust pipe by hand.

  • Detach the clamp from around the EGR gas temperature sensor with a socket wrench. Remove the evaporative emissions (EVAP) hose from the hook on the EGR valve.

  • Detach the rubber vacuum hose from the port at the top of EGR valve by hand, and use a socket wrench to unfasten the bolts that secure the EGR valve to the intake manifold.

  • Remove the EGR valve from the Toyota engine compartment.
