Lexus LS 400 Tune Up Procedures

The LS400 is Lexus' flagship sedan. Since its release in 1990, the LS400 has been a top-selling luxury car because of its looks and features. To keep the LS400 in top shape and avoid car problems in the future, you should schedule a major tune up or perform one yourself every 30,000 to 60,000 miles.

Basic Fluids Check

  • The engine oil in the LS400 needs to be replaced every 5,000 miles to provide proper lubrication. Changing the oil filter should also be performed at every oil change. The oil filter helps filter debris and dirt from the engine and transmission. Lexus recommends that LS400 owners check the coolant, brake, windshield washer and power steering fluids at every oil change. If fluid levels are low, they need to be refilled to their required levels. For a major tune up, the engine coolant needs to be drained, flushed and replaced.

Air Filter

  • The air filter protects and filters air flow in the engine. Over time the air filter becomes clogged with dust, debris and dirt which will increase the LS400's fuel consumption while decreasing its acceleration power. Lexus recommends changing the air filter at 60,000 miles then every 30,000 miles thereafter.

Spark Plugs and Battery Testing

  • Lexus recommends that the spark plugs on an LS400 be changed every 60,000 miles. Lexus car owners can either change the plugs themselves or have a certified mechanic change them. The battery should also be inspected due to weather and driving conditions that might affect battery life. Testing the battery can be done by either the owner or a certified mechanic. If the battery test shows a low voltage level, the battery should be replaced.

Tire Maintenance

  • Regular tire rotation will improve the LS400's performance, and Lexus recommends performing one at every oil change. The car tire pressure should be checked monthly, and a wheel alignment performed every 15,000 or 30,000 miles, depending on road conditions.
