How to Tune up a 2005 PT Cruiser

How to "tune-up" a 2005 PT Cruiser. A "tune-up" today is quite simple. Unless there is a problem such as a check engine light, there will be no adjustments needed, although a high-mileage engine may need a check of the timing. This and any other diagnostics and adjustments are best done by a professional mechanic with the proper scanner to check the timing and engine control functions. However, unlike older cars, newer cars do not need tune-up adjustments unless there is a recall or repair. An ordinary maintainance tune-up consists simply of replacing spark plugs, PCV valve and air filter. Chrysler recommends performing a tune-up every 30,000 miles.FYI- They also recommend replacing engine coolant, transmission fluid and filter and fuel filter at this interval as well

Things You'll Need

  • 3/8 drive ratchet with 6" extension
  • screwdriver
  • air intake cleaner
  • clean rags
  • parts- spark plugs, pcv valve, air filter.
  • wd-40 or liquid wrench
  • 5/8 spark plug socket
  • spark plug gap tool
  • optional- anti-sieze lubricant & dielectric grease.
  • If possible, spray wd-40 at spark plug bases to make spark plugs easier to wrench loose. Then, go get parts; spark plugs, pcv valve-some models have, others don't, air filter and air intake cleaner and rag- if needed. You may also need to buy a 5/8 spark plug socket and spark plug gapping tool too! Get the tools ready. Make sure engine is cold- for safety and ease of plug removal.

  • Inspect spark plug wires. If they have more than 60,000 miles or show any wear (especially cracks and damaged ends, replace them. To replace spark plug wires, I recommend purchasing the wires from the dealer. Often, replacement brand wires don't fit exactly, which can cause problems with installation and wear.

  • Replace spark plugs and wires(if-needed) ONE AT A TIME. That way you don't get wires mixed up. The car will not run or will run badly if the wires are not installed in order.

  • Loosen one plug and check the end in the block (electrode). The end should be slightly worn and be slightly ashen. If the plug has a lot of sludge, the insulator is broken or shows other damage there may be engine damage. Check with a mechanic immediately if this is the case. Gap a new plug by checking the gap with the tool and comparing it to the gap specification on the engine emission control sticker under the hood. A typical gap is 35mm. If the gap needs to be adjusted, gently push the electrode with the tool to shrink the gap or expand the gap by using the tool to spread the gap. Most of the time the plugs are pre gapped and you won't need to adjust. Recheck the gap. If you choose, put a thin layer of antiseize lubricant on the threads of each plug. Repeat this step for each plug.

  • Hand screw the plug into the engine block until it is fairly tight. Place the plug socket over the plug, seating the rubber grommet on the plug. Then tighten the plug with the ratchet until it seats on the block and then about one quarter to one half turn more. Do not over tighten or the plug can break. Repeat this step for each plug.

  • If the wires need to be replaced, replace them one at a time, installing them the exact way the original plug wires were installed. When removing wires, hold them by the boots so the terminals don't get stuck on the coil posts or spark plug. Some like to put dielectric grease on the spark plug wire terminals to seal the ignition system. Just put a bit on each end if you choose. When installing plugs, make sure the boots seat. You should feel a positive grip when the plug wire seats.

  • Remove air cleaner cover with screwdriver and remove air filter. Clean air filter housing with a clean rag. If the air intake is dirty, use air intake cleaner to clean. Be sure to cover any sensors near air intake. If cleaner soaks a sensor, it can be damaged. Install new air filter and replace cover.

  • Replace PCV valve if so equipped. The PCV valve is on the valve cover and goes into a rubber grommet in the valve cover. Gently pull the Pcv hose of the valve and pull the old valve out of the valve cover. Install the new pcv valve in the same direction as the original one. If the PCV hose is cracked or broken, you can get a new one at the dealer.
