How to Remove the Smell of Transmission Fluid

Transmission fluid is a powerful substance, and anyone who has ever gotten it on his clothes knows that it is capable of both staining and permeating whatever it touches with a strong, unpleasant odor. For those who work on their own vehicles, however, getting transmission fluid on clothing is quite common. Removing the smell of transmission fluid from your clothes may seem impossible, but there are ways that one can help to alleviate the smell using common household items.

Things You'll Need

  • Talcum powder
  • Liquid detergent
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Take the article of clothing off, being careful not to spread or blotch the transmission fluid stain. Lay the clothing on a flat work surface with the stain facing up.

  • Take a handful of talcum powder and spread it over the stain. Pat the powder onto the stain with a small amount of pressure and let sit overnight. The talcum powder will play a key role in absorbing the odor caused by the stain.

  • Brush the powder off, taking care to also remove any buildup or residue underneath. Using a powerful dish soap, hand-wash the garment. Ensure that you are putting pressure on the actual stain itself.

  • Take a small amount of rubbing alcohol to the stain if it still remains present. Note that this will bleach the clothing of its color wherever contact is made; however, it will also eliminate an unsightly stain, and will help to break down the transmission fluid so that the odor goes away.
