How to Make Fuel Out of Sugar Cane

Many businesses and homes across the globe are turning to alternative energy sources to power machines, vehicles and electronics. Although solar and wind dominate the discussion, many have turned to other sources to gain power.

Sugar cane is regularly used as a means of power by sugar refineries and has proven to be a cheap and efficient method.

Things You'll Need

  • Sugar cane husks
  • Furnace
  • Steam powered turbines
  • Refine the sugar cane to make sugar. The juices inside the cane, which actually make the sugar, reduce the efficiency of the fuel and can be sold for profit. The remnants of this system leave you with the husks, or bagasse, of the cane which can be used for fuel.

  • Dry out the sugar cane husks by either leaving them in the sun or drying them in an oven.

  • Put the bagasse in a furnace. This can be any kind of industrial furnace that uses steam turbines, but due to the nature of the fuel being used, it is almost exclusively used by the sugar industry.

  • Cooking the husks will release heat which in turn will boil water producing steam which turns the turbines.

  • Powering the stationary machines using the bugasse will give you an entirely carbon neutral power system.
