The Oil Requirements for a 1986 BMW 325

Knowing the proper engine oil and oil system parts to use to meet the needs of your vehicle is valuable information to possess. The oil that is typically used for a 1986 BMW 325, like many other cars on the road, is 10W-30. The oil needs of your vehicle may differ, however, based on its use.

Oil

  • The recommended motor oil to use for your BMW 325 is 10W-30, but you can also use 10W-40 or 5W-30. The digits "10" and "5" indicate the weight of the oil when it's cold. The digits "30" and "40" indicate the weight of the oil when it's hot. Unlike SAE30 and SAE40 that stay the same weight and viscosity whether cold or hot, 10W-30, 10W-40, and 5W-30 expand as they get hot. If you live in cold temperatures, you should use 5W-30. Heavier oils, such as the 10W-30 and 10W-40, are good for older engines, driving in warmer conditions and if you are doing "hard" driving like towing.

Oil Capacity

  • The oil capacity is 4.3 quarts. If you are changing the oil yourself, buy 5 quarts to ensure you have enough oil to adequately fill the engine.

Oil Filter

  • Several oil filters on the market are suitable for a BMW 325. The Fram Extra Guard FFPH2870A oil filter can be found in most auto parts stores. The Hastings HALF157 oil filter is another common choice.

Oil Pan

  • If you need to replace your oil pan, you can use the MTC W0133-1598663 oil pan or OES Genuine W0133-1598663.

Oil Pan Gasket

  • Oil pan gaskets need to be replaced periodically. This will be evident if you notice an oil leak around the oil pan. The Febi W0133-1638972 oil pan gasket is a cork gasket, while the Goetze W0133-1638972 oil pan gasket is a cork and rubber gasket.
