Last year, Marc-André Hubert and his AutoXtrëm team from Gatineua, Canada made headlines by setting the North American quarter-mile record for a FWD Volkswagen (et 8/09). The 9sec hatch became an icon of the VW community, but Marc and his crew are back this year with bigger ambitions.

They've been developing a new '01 Golf and three months into the build, the car was nearing completion and ready for its debut at Spring Show & Go. It's also scheduled to appear at Waterfest, where they hope to break into the 8sec bracket.

The car will have a 1.8T motor with a built bottom-end featuring forged crank, Integrated Engineering i-beam rods, CP pistons, Calico race bearings and ARP studs. The head has been fully ported and fitted with a Supertech valvetrain, thanks to the guys at TK Race Heads (tkrace.com).

Poking out of the hood is a Bullseye Power S372R extended-tip T4 turbo with race cover. It's mounted on a manifold constructed from scratch by Racecraft Fabrication. To fuel the beast, there are twin fuel pumps and Injector Dynamics 2000cc injectors. Eurodyne was behind the tune to ensure perfect power delivery for the quarter-mile.

For traction, the front-end has been heavily modified to accommodate the enormous front wheels with their wide M&H slicks. As for the chassis, Marc credits Ken's Kustom Chassis for the elaborate rollcage.

Weighing in at hair above 1900 lb, this car is destined for glory. "We've never been so committed to run eight's. My goal is 8.50sec with this car," Marc told us. "We've made some great improvements all round, and one of them is weight loss. It'll be 200+lb less and will make 100+whp than last year's car with better gear ratios.   |   2001 Volkswagen Golf - Garage Projects

Thatcher 993
After building an impressive Mk3 VW GTI widebody with a turbocharged VR6, Thatcher Schultz is moving onto a new project car. He recently picked up this '95 Porsche 993 with aspirations of creating an RSR clone with a touch of Euro flavor. Started last December, the car is coming together nicely.

The body features RSR flares and front lip, with a 3.8 RS rear wing. The headlight squirters have been shaved from the front fenders, while the roof has been wrapped in carbon/kevlar - not a common practice on a Porsche...

The interior previously had a cage fitted, but Thatcher has painted it and fitted sound deadening material to the floor. An RS carpet kit from Germany was trimmed and glued in. New leather Recaro Pole Position seats are on their way, with double stitching and charcoal alcantara inserts.

The 993 will be lowered on KW V3 coilovers. To push the envelope, one side of the car will have RH Supercup wheels while the other will have three-piece Twist wheels. All four will be painted purple to contrast the silver exterior.

As for the motor, the owner is putting the factory 3.6 liter on hold until he finishes the interior and exterior. But that will probably change soon if Thatcher is true to his old habits.
