Fueled by EPA concerns, the API has recently reduced its allowable tolerances of friction-reducing zinc-phosphorus compounds like ZDDP in motor oil. This is bad news for engines; zinc-phosphorus compounds adhere to metal, maintaining a super-thin coating of oil on moving parts that reduces friction and wear, and gradually dissolves with use.
