Jetta, A4, And A GTI - Building Two Volkswagens And An Audi - eurotuner Magazine

We've followed a few projects from Robert Lackey at Shifty's Spraywerkz in Oklahoma City. This time around, the project is the work of wife, Tosha. Apparently, she'd been talking about building a Mk4 Jetta for about a year but he didn't realize how serious she was until she bought this '01 GL 2.0 from Wichita. The car has 34k miles on it, but there was some engine damage. So they've rounded up the parts to build a 16v hybrid using the stock 2.0 block and crank. The car previously had an EIP turbo. That's gone but a Sachs clutch, Peloquin LSD, Neuspeed stainless cat-back and EBC brakes remain.

After two day's work, Tosha and husband stripped the car and pulled the drivetrain. They'd bought new bumpers and body parts, plus several gallons of '00 Bettle Vapor blue paint for the (inevitable) color change!

So Rob tore down the motor, discovering #3 piston had disintegrated. He then fabricated a coolant flange adapter for the 16v head and received adapters for the throttle body and fuel pressure regulator from Bahn Brenner, along with a BBM fuel rail.

In the meantime, Tosha started the bodywork, filling the trunk emblem and prepping the door jambs for paint. Robert then filled the hood notch and painted the engine bay. Since then, Tosha has returned to school for her Master's, so Rob's kept the project going with their oldest son, Quentin.

We last looked at Nicolas Clages' '02 Audi A4 3.0 in et 7/09 where he'd started on the bodywork himself. Since then, the front bumper has been shaved and fitted. However, he sold the carbon hood because he felt it didn't fit into his hot rod theme. Instead, he built a custom sleepy böser hood. The bodywork was then smoothed, sealed and primered.

The previous wheels have gone on his girlfriend's A4, since Nic has found new wheels for the project. He's also starting to gather parts for the air-ride. He's even ordered the first interior parts for a black interior swap. So we look forward to seeing how this develops next month.

Nichol Bagged
Two months ago, John Nichol showed us some exciting updates to his Jazz blue 20AE GTI. Already equipped with molded bumpers, air-ride suspension, six-point rollcage and Zauber wheels, he continued to push the envelope by tidying up the 1.8T's engine bay. This included shaving sections of the bay and hiding most of the wiring. After hours of shaving, filling, welding and grinding, the bay is done and was sprayed grey to match John's fighter jet inspiration. Classics to Customs bodyshop finished the paint and airbrushed rivets over every weld spot to continue the jet theme. Once the bay was done, John refitted his 1.8T and reports it's running like a champ with a GT28RS turbo upgrade, new rods, larger fuel pump and injectors, plus water/methanol injection. He recently upgraded the brakes as well, using Brembo GT two-piece rotors and four-piston calipers. The GTI just needs final touches, so stay tuned for updates.
