Peripheral iPod Interface Installation - Tacoma Audio Haven

You may recognize this truck from an earlier Fantastic Four story. The truck was looking good, but the owner was complaining about the horrible sound quality from her FM Modulator. She liked the convenience of charging it while playing music, but the constant cutting in and out of the music along with the static had her wanting a new solution. Peripheral Car Audio was the maker of this story's interface and the '07 Tacoma kit was ordered from Crutchfield. From the Driver Seat
This kit was simple to install and worked very well once plugged in. However, there was one snag when it came to the Peripheral unit. Out of the box and into the truck, we plugged the iPod into the cable and after a few seconds, we smelled something burning. One quick touch of the iPod and we instantly realized the cable was sending too much voltage to the iPod. Luckily we unplugged it before the 30G iPod was wiped of its music and movies. A call into Peripheral Audio's tech department saw us wait 14 minutes before talking to a real person and even then, they said they had never heard of that problem. We requested a replacement unit, and the next day, our Tacoma was playing music from our iPod with a new Peripheral interface. This problem put a sour taste in our mouth but the new unit did perform flawlessly. Our other concern was the DIP switches we mentioned in caption 12. Initially the unit came as a generic Asian interface and the website that was supposed to provide us with the setup info wasn't an actual site. We had to go through and try all nine configurations, while trying not to melt the iPod. This was a big hassle, as the configuration was the last one on the list and ended up not working because of the faulty unit. We may have encountered a bad apple from the bunch because the new unit worked well and the sound quality was excellent. Our experience with Crutchfield was, as always, painless.
