Toyos Newest: Finally a Civilized Big Tire

It used to be the only people who bought off-road tires were the ones putting them on their trail-built rigs. These tires were often noisy, had low load ratings, and were nearly impossible to drive on the freeway (some weren't rated for speeds above 60 mph). Now, lifted truck owners who aren't as interested in extreme off-roading want the rugged look of mud terrains and the ability to tow and drive on the freeway at speed. This has caused the market to change, and there are now numerous levels of off-road tires to choose from.

Toyo recently introduced its newest tire, the Open Country M/T. This tire isn't the traditional hard-core rockcrawling tire; it's a civilized, road-ready radial that will survive the toughest backcountry challenges. The Open Country M/T is meant to accommodate a wide range of buyers, from the Rubicon crew on one end to this new mud-terrain buyer, who wants something that's comfortable and quiet (for an M/T), without losing off-road capability. Toyo's M/T can endure life as the rubber on a daily driver and tackle serious trails. 163 0404 Toyotire02 L   |   163 0404 Toyotire02 L To serve both ends of the spectrum, this tire was packed with technology to make it capable of handling severe heat and frequently changing loads. It has an aggressive tread for traction and good looks, deep siping and an open-shoulder design for improved grip, and tread-block stabilizers. The tire uses a three-ply polyester casing, two wide steel belts, and two spiral-wound nylon cap plies--all of which make handling comfortable and predictable, on dirt or asphalt. In addition to its durable construction, the Open Country M/T uses an abrasion-resistant compound in the sidewall, shielding its most vulnerable area. This tire has an excellent load rating, possibly the highest available in a mud terrain: the 38x15.50x18LT tire has a 128 rating, meaning it can handle up to 3960 pounds per tire. It's also capable of a 99-mph top speed. New sizes were just introduced, making five total available, with load ratings ranging from 114-128, all of which are Q speed-rated.
