Auto Insurance Claims: Second opinion, claims advice, claim help

Question
I was involved in an auto accident where a lady ran a red light. I have been in the care of a chiropractor for 4 months now.  I was hit on the left side, so everything just on my left side was out of whack.  I was recently released from the chiropractor.  I received X rays but no MRI.  Should I get a second opinion and get an MRI, before settling with the insurance company.  I feel like maybe the chiropractor just released me so he can get paid.  I still have pain in my left hip that aches all the time.

Answer
 Hello Tina,

You don't mention how you feel.  If you are not recovered after 4 months, it might be a very good idea to get a second opinion, and possibly an MRI.

You also don't mention why the chiro released you.  Did the doctor explain that you had reached maximum medical improvement meaning you are as good as you are going to get?  Did the doctor say you are completely recovered with no permanent injuries?

Here's the point.  In order to settle with the insurance company, you will no doubt have to sign a release.  This means you have no future right to file any claims, even if it turns out that you need more treatment for your injuries.

I don't know how bad your injuries are, but you need to know absolutely if you will need further treatment, and if you still have symptoms, you need to know why.  If you do still have symptoms, the second opinion is a good idea.

Depending on the magnitude of your injuries as well as the amount of liability coverage available to you, you might also want to speak to a personal injury attorney.  If you decide to do this, check online for experienced attorneys and also check them online via your state Bar.  You can also see if the Nebraska Bar offers referrals.

These attorneys generally offer a free consultation and then take a percentage - usually starting at about 30% - of the settlement.

Just remember, the settlement is permanent.  Make certain you understand everything you need to about your injuries before you sign a release.

Good luck, hope this helps.
