Auto Insurance Claims: Two accidents in 1 month - hit and run rear-ended in my car, and then rear-ended in friends car, chiropractic massage, central repository

Question
Hello, 1 month back I was rear-ended in a hit and run accident. Since it was a hit and run my insurance company had to cover the medical expenses. I wasn't injured too bad but I did have some evaluation and chiropractic medical expenses. I might have a few more chiropractic/massage medical expenses within the next few weeks.  There was also $4000 in damage to my car that my insurance company has already paid for.

Last week I was riding in a friends car and we were rear-ended. The other driver stopped and insurance info was exchanged. I, again, wasn't injured too bad but did have some (new) back pain. It's hard to say what symptoms are from this car accident vs from my car accident 1 month back.

I'm now worried about telling my insurance company about this 2nd accident because I'm not sure if they'll try to fight any further minor medical expenses from my first accident.

And also, how will the the 2nd accident guys insurance react if I tell them I was in previous accident 1 month back?

Bottom line : Should I mention to either insurance company the other accident? If I don't, is it likely they will find out about the other one? Or I am legally required to tell both insurance companies?

Answer
Hi Ian,

If you are specifically asked about other accidents you've been involved in you must tell the truth. The insurance company for the second accident will likely learn of your first accident. All insurance company report claim information to a central repository. Then when a claim is presented, the insurance company checks this data base to see if you have prior claims. This is to prevent fraud and double dipping. Even though you have been involved in 2 accidents the bills must get paid. The 2 companies should coordinate with each other to decide who is going to pay what percentage of each claim.

I hope this helps
