Auto Insurance Claims: Damage to mirror of parked car, side mirror, free estimate

Question
While parking, I hit and broke the driver's side mirror of a parked vehicle.  I left my phone number for contact. Is this something that requires a claim with my insurance, or, can I settle with the owner? If so, how can I determine the estimate of damage?

Answer
The owner of the car has the option of settling with your insurance company or directly with you.  Often people prefer to work with the insurer because they feel it is safer and regulated.  If the owner is willing to settle with you directly, he/she can take the car to any reputable body shop for a free estimate, and you can pay based on that.
