Auto Insurance Claims: adequate auto insurance coverage, medical payments coverage, auto insurance coverage

Question
Hello Richard,
I live in Pa and have a general questions concerning having adequate auto insurance. Do you recommend paying the extra amount for full tort? I have medical insurance but have high deductibles , should I get a higher medical on auto ? agent told me to just get 5,000 and my medical would not charge me deductible . what is an adequate liability amount?  I have 100/300? could someone come after my house or savings for more?

Thank you

Answer
Hi Marianne,

You purchase insurance to cover potential losses. 100/300 is a reasonable amount but, if you have assets greater than that you should consider purchasing an umbrella liability policy. An umbrella liability policy for 1 million dollars will only cost you about $150 to $200 per year. The ubrella provides excess coverage on top of your auto and homeowners liability coverage. It's a great way to give you the peace of mind that you will not be involved in an incident that could wipe you out.

As for the medical coverage. Yes you should have full tort and also increase your Medical Payments coverage to at least the amount of your private medical deductible.

I hope this helps
