Auto Insurance Claims: Dent in parking lot, comp claim, windy days

Question
I had parked my car in the lot of a store.  I did park away from any other car, and we went in side for approx 15 minutes.  When I returned to my car I found a dent in the passenger side of my car.  There were no cars around me, but it was a very windy days.  Reported winds of up to 60 mph.  I filed a claim, and my insurance company is telling me it goes as a collision claim and not a comp claim.  So they are saying I have to pay the higher deductible and have it count against my record.  I want to know why this is not a comp claim? I was not driving the car, no one was in the car.  There is no way to say how the damage got there.  It could have easily been an object blown into the car.  Is there a way to fight the collision claim?

Answer
Hi Dan,

Unfortunately, you insurance company is correct. A comp claim would be for theft, vandalizm, hail, etc. A collision claim is when there is damage from a collision with another object even when you are not in the car. Even if the wind had blown a shopping cart into your car, it would be a collision claim.

I hope this helps
