Auto Insurance Claims: pedestrian accident, letter in the mail, insurance details

Question
Hi there,

I was driving in a parking lot outside a grocery store and may have hit a
pedestrian.
When I saw him I stopped the car but he had to jump out of the way and
dropped his shopping. I have no idea if I actually hit him. He just started
cursing at me telling me to pay attention, but said he was ok and had no
injuries, no police report was filed and he did not ask me for my insurance
details. he came over to my car and banged my window and was very angry
but then picked up his bag and started walking away so I left the scene too. It
all happened so quickly and in the space of about 3 minutes.

Anyway this was a week ago and the more I think about it the more worried I
become that he may (after the event) decide to sue. There are cameras that
may have captured my license plate so I'm now terrified that I'm going to get
a letter in the mail at some point over the next 2 years regarding this
incident.

I do have bodily injury insurance 100000/300000.

My question is what is the likelihood that this could rear it's ugly head over
the next couple of years and if it does would my insurance company take over
and pay the settlement? Should i tell them about it or wait to see if I get a
letter??

I'm having trouble sleeping over this cause I'm so worried. I've never had an
accident before and I'm scared that this will hang over my head for the next 2
years because of the statute of limitations law.

Thank you.

Answer
Hi Francisco,

It is very unlikely that anything will come of this and you should not lose sleep over it. Since no information was exchanged and the guy seemed to be ok there is really nothing you can do. You should not report this to your insurance company until and unless you are contact by this guy asking for money. If you report it now, you have no information to give such as the guys name and address or if he was injured or not, etc. But even without this information, your insurance company will consider this to be an at-fault event and will raise your rates.

So just relax and know that there is nothing you can do unless and until this guy contacts you and then you can report it to your insurance company and they will pay if needed.

I hope this helps
